Big + Small: Wrapped Washer Necklaces for Design Mom

Today, I'm a contributor over at Designmom and confess that I've been checking all day to see if these were ready to share with you.  I'm so happy that the time has come. Sometimes simplicity speaks the strongest, don't you agree?

Today's project is exactly that and full of so much meaning: Mother Necklaces for Grown Ups + Birthday Charm Necklace for Smalls (Can you believe these were made by wrapping ordinary washers?) You can make these, too! We'd love to hear from you and see what you make.

If you look at our examples,
- I made the Big version for Grown ups: 3 wrapped washers that are bound for me --- one for each of my 3 kids.
- My daughter, Francesca, made the Small Version for kids: She wrapped 10 washers in rainbow colored embroidery thread,  since she's 10 years old. We hope you have as much fun making and wearing these as we do!

Grownups, you can create a Mother’s Day necklace by wrapping one washer per child in a color/colors of your choosing. The disks can then be bound together to create a beautiful geometric necklace full of meaning.

For you Smalls, create a necklace with a wrapped washer, one for each year of your age, in whatever colors you like, and string them on a chain.

These adorable necklaces can be made by absolutely anyone. You choose the color and the thread you'd like to use. So far, we've made these in waxed linen, ordinary embroidery thread and silk thread. I love all of them. I'd love to hear if you make them and what you choose, too. There are infinite possibilities. In fact, the boys got in on the wrapping washers, too. They decided to make Key Chains, with one wrapped washer for each year of their age, too.

This side-by-side project is so simple, but at the same time, creates such a beautiful and meaningful piece for both Bigs and Smalls.

If you're looking for a Mother's Day Present, these are perfect or just a wonderful project to create together. Wishing you a wonderful week and Happy Making! Click here to continue to the full article and Tutorial at Designmom

  1. What a sweet picture and a great craft idea.

    1. Thank you so much. It was fun from conception through completion!

  2. Cuteness! I think both the colorful and white threaded necklaces would look good, depend on the color of the attire we are wearing ;)

    1. Dear Onel, I don't know how I missed your comment but, it's never too late, I hope with a: thank you. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I wore my white version all Summer long. I had originally thought I'd made the "small" version for myself, as well because I love the casualness of it. We're going to be gathering a group soon to make these for gift giving. They're really so much fun to make.

  3. Just came across this...LOVE IT! I am a Scout Leader always looking for crafts to make with recycled or repurposed materials. We recently used washers...we painted them with fingernail polish and turned them into cute necklace charms that way. Like this new way so much...can't wait to share!

    Thank You!
