Things we love at 43 N

I know that many of you have been on summer vacation for weeks, but we're just starting.  Isn't Summer vacation great? In the past few days, we've traveled from 59 degrees N to 43 degrees N and these are some of the things we are loving (besides the given: family!)

1) Lightning Bugs. We don't have these in Sweden.
2) Dusky Nights.  It's never truly dark, where we live. We have the "almost" midnight sun where it's never completely dark, just midnight dusky.
3) Running with things that glow-in-the-dark.
4) Hot temperatures. We were peaking in the 60's as we left Stockholm
5) Water, water, water for swimming, splashing and sprinklers for running through.

What are your simple Summer pleasures? I never imagined that a warm, dark night would be exotic for our children, but it is. It's so much fun to see them re-discover the thrill of this, as they run outside at dusk, during our Summer visits. Our youngest announced two days ago that "this is the best day of my life," before bedtime and after a night of notching off the list above. I'd love to hear from you. Are your children's summer pleasures the same as the ones you had as a child?

  1. I've been spending the past week with my two children in my hometown 30 miles north of New York City and I can say that we, too, have rediscovered the simple pleasures that you mentioned. Things that I grew up with, but have since forgotten since moving to Sweden. Warm nights sans sweaters are an absolute luxury for us as was walking in NYC today with just a simple sundress, bare shouldres and the warm, slightly humid air. I think I am the only one among my friends and family not complaining about the heat! Enjoy your summer break!

  2. Oh yhea! We just enjoy the longest days in whole year and kids don't want to go to bed cos of that:) but it's really good:) we've just started holidays:) happy free summer time!

Thank you!
